If any of you have seen the film C KKompany, the story of Ungli is similar. Tired of injustice and corrupt law enforcement, ordinary people form a gang to set things right. The Ungli gang — Maya (Kangana), Abhay (Randeep Hooda), Gautam (Neil Bhoopalam) and Kalim (Angad Bedi) — does exactly this. They identify people who are victims of the system and teach a unique lesson which also gets wide media coverage. In their words, they give the “ungli” to the system. On the other hand are the police officers who are responsible for catching them — ACP Ashok played by Sanjay Dutt and Nikhil played by Emraan Hashmi. Nikhil comes up with a great plan to catch the Ungli gang, he becomes a member of the gang. But when he learns of the reason for why the Ungli gang formed in the first place, he becomes confused. Should Nikhil give the gang up to the police or not?
Ungli is an entertaining watch. Aside from an excellent cast, it has a meaningful story and good direction. It’s interesting to see how the gang thinks of ways to expose corrupt individuals. They have very unique ideas and double lives — their secret activities as part of the Ungli gang, and their regular lives with day-time jobs. The roles were actually very easy for this cast. We all know how talented Kangana, Randeep, Emraan and Sanjay are. These roles were a little below their capacity. I was a bit disappointed with the screen time Kangana had. I was hoping a more of a central role for her. Randeep and Emraan had center stage. Sanjay Dutt could have had more screen time too but his character is vital for the end of the film so he left a nice impact with his character.
Another plus point is the guest appearance of the beautiful Shraddha Kapoor in the song “Dance Basanti.” It was sizzling.
I recommend Ungli. I think it’s worth your time and money.
