I enjoyed this Yash Raj production starring Ayushmann Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar. The film is about a couple who have an arranged marriage. The issue is that the girl is overweight and Ayushmann’s character marries her unwillingly and doesn’t treat her well. They want to divorce but the judge requires that they stay together for six months for the final decision. In that time frame, there is a race in which husbands run carrying their wives and the winner gets a money reward. The family wants this couple to join the race. The rest of the story is how the race brings them together.
The film is interesting in that it’s a romantic story with a happy ending but along the way, we are reminded of a lot of truths about marriage. For example, strange first nights of a couple who don’t know anything about each other and don’t love one another and how parents have different expectations and ideas than youngsters about what marriage is all about. This film portrays these various scenarios without losing tempo or humor. What’s also nice is that it takes place during the time when cassette tapes were still around and Ayushmann’s character is a huge fan of Kumar Sanu. The very last song in the film was so nice, a typical 90s Kumar Sanu song. It was a lot of fun to see that.
The only criticism I have of the film, which is a minor one, is that the actual race which is also the title of the film and what’s shown in the posters, is only a brief few minutes of the film at the end. The actual story happens before the race, so there is just a little misrepresentation there in terms of the marketing.
I really enjoyed the entire film and highly recommend it to you.
