This is a Punjabi romantic film with Jimmy Shergill and Kulraj Randhawa in the leads.
I’m sure that even those of you who have seen the film don’t know that this is a remake, of a Telugu film called Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. Now if you ask the makers, they will deny it because they didn’t copy the film entirely, they added and changed a few scenes. But still, it’s basically the same storyline as Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. I’m not surprised that NN was remade, it’s a great film and was a huge hit in the South.
You know that I usually enjoy originals more than remakes, because well, originals are originals. But I have a good reason this time, because the script of NN was superior than Tera Mera Ki Rishta. Especially the ending was much better. But I’m going to cut TMKS some slack because even NN heavily borrowed from another film, Maine Pyar Kiya, Salman Khan’s debut. Are you confused yet? Okay, so Nuvvostanante Nenoddanta is a slightly different version of of Maine Pyar Kiya and Tera Mera Ki Rishta is a slightly different version of Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. But even remakes are new films because the cast and performances are different and all three of these films were targeted for different film sectors and regions. So let’s get to Tera Mera Ki Rishta.
I think the cast of the film is good. Jimmy Shergill is not the greatest actor and he looked slightly too old for Kulraj in this film. His career in Bollywood never really took off despite making a significant debut in Mohabbatein. I’m not sure of his status in Punjabi cinema but I think he has done better in the Punjabi industry. Although he continues to play second leads in Hindi cinema fairly successfully. Jimmy Shergill is a weird guy. Sometimes he acts decently and sometimes he can’t act at all. I can’t hate him and yet I can’t love him. He’s always stuck in the middle and this is the way I felt about his performance in this film as well. I think his expressions are very limited. He’s kind of like the male Katrina Kaif, minus the looks! But I have to say, I thought he did pretty good in Tanu Weds Manu and Special 26. He was okay in this film as well.
Kulraj Randhawa is so cute and she acts well! My mom got a glimpse of her while I was watching the film and said “this is the first time I’m seeing a beautiful girl in Indian cinema!” Isn’t that crazy? I think my mom liked her innocence and simplicity. I also think she’s beautiful, she has beautiful eyes and a thin figure but her nose is distracting. I heard she had surgery done after this film, so I’m sure that’s not an issue anymore. I think she totally steals hearts with her performance in this film.
The supporting cast of the film is also very strong with Anupam Kher and Archana Puran Singh.
I don’t want to get into the details of the story, but it’s basically about a boy who grows up wealthy in England. He visits India for his cousin’s marriage and falls in love with his cousin’s best friend, who grew up in a village, at the wedding. Due to a misunderstanding, the girl and her father are disrespected by the boy’s family and the two get separated. The rest of the film is about how the boy goes about winning the girl’s father’s heart so that he can marry the girl. And in order to do so, he has to live in their village and change his lifestyle.
The music of the film is very good, not surprising right! Is Punjabi music ever bad?! I love Play the Dhol the most, it’s a great fun song.
The story is very sweet, it’s about sacrifice in love. I think it’s definitely worth a watch. If you get the opportunity, also see Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. And come back here and tell me which one you liked better!
